JAKE GERARD LOUNGED in a canvas deck chair with the August afternoon sun warm on his face. He’d put in many long hours for the past month and even though it was Saturday, his busiest day of the week, he’d granted himself a few much-needed hours of R and R before returning to the restaurant in time for the dinner rush. Since the sun stayed out until midnight, most tourists didn’t show up for dinner until 10:00 p.m.

He was surrounded by beautiful women. Candy, a shapely blonde from Memphis, had just popped the top on a can of beer for him. Lola, a green-eyed brunette from Kansas City, was feeding him slices of cantaloupe. Amber of the coal-black hair, from Tucson, baited his hook and dropped his fishing line into placid waters.Letting gorgeous babes cater to his every whim probably wasn’t such a smart idea. He certainly didn’t wish to lead them on—he was into having a good time, not breaking hearts—and he’d made it clear from the moment he’d met them that his new business venture came before pleasure. But what was the point in advertising for a wife if you couldn’t enjoy the search?

Keep things light. That was his motto. Or rather, it had been until in an impulsive move last winter, he had decided to go in with his three friends on their Alaskan-bachelors-looking-to-get-hitched ad in Metropolitan magazine. At the time, he hadn’t been quite certain he was ready for marriage, but he could now clearly see the benefits of the national exposure.

Bear Creek, Alaska, which had once lamented the lopsided ratio of ten men to every woman, had been inundated with females since the ad appeared in the June issue. His search for the right wife could take a long time. Might even stretch out over years. Especially since he’d just bought the Paradise Diner and was working hard to turn it into a first-class dining establishment.

Jake grinned. Yep. No sense in making a premature commitment simply because his buddies were falling in love right and left.

You can’t hurry love, so the saying goes.

“Another slice of cantaloupe, Jake?” Lola asked.

“No thanks, darlin’. But you can go back to massagin’ my neck if you wish.”

“Hey,” Candy whined. “It’s my turn to rub your neck.”

“You got to slather him down with sunscreen, you don’t get to massage him, too,” Amber chimed in.

“Ladies, ladies. There’s plenty of me to go around.”

“Hey,” Lola interrupted. “What’s going on over there?”

Jake shaded his eyes and squinted in the direction Lola pointed. “Well, I’ll be damned,” he said.

Jake pushed his sunglasses up on his forehead, picked up the binoculars resting on the dock beside him and focused in for a closer look.

A giant skunk was stalking after a determined young red-haired woman striding away from the ship. She was dressed in a very provocative outfit. Black bustier, black fishnet stockings, red garter, red-and-black feather boa and three-inch heels that showed off a heart-stopping pair of legs. Whoaaaa, baby.
